A Little Laundry Secret for Home Cooks: Powder or Liquid Detergent?

If you cook regularly, you know that the kitchen isn't the only place that gets messy! Between splashes of olive oil, tomato sauce, chocolate, fruit, flour and all those little cooking accidents, our aprons, tea towels and kitchen cloths go through quite a lot.

And recently, I made an interesting discovery: the type of laundry detergent you use can make a difference!

Powder or liquid? It turns out that each has its strengths.

Powder Detergent: The White Laundry Champion

Powder detergent is often the better choice for white laundry and stubborn stains. Many formulas contain oxygen-based bleaching agents that help remove coloured stains and keep whites looking brighter.

Think tomato sauce, coffee, tea and other kitchen mishaps!

Its little disadvantage? Powder can dissolve less easily in cold water, especially in short cycles. It generally performs better in warmer washes, although some modern formulas are designed for lower temperatures too.

Liquid Detergent: The Colour Protector

Liquid detergent is particularly convenient for coloured and dark fabrics because most formulas don't contain the oxygen-based bleaching agents found in many powders.

It dissolves easily at lower temperatures and is especially useful for greasy stains, something we home cooks know all about! You can also apply a little directly to a suitable stain before washing, following the product instructions.

My Little Rule for a Busy Kitchen

  • White tea towels, kitchen cloths and washable white aprons: powder detergent, using the temperature recommended for the fabric and detergent.

  • Coloured aprons, clothes and kitchen textiles: liquid detergent to help preserve their colours.

  • Greasy splashes: pre-treat the stain before washing; liquid detergent can be particularly useful.

  • Delicate fabrics: always use a detergent and programme suitable for the material.

One important reminder: always follow the garment's care label. A higher temperature isn't automatically better, and some stains need treating before the wash.

A Small Change, a Better Laundry Routine!

I love discovering and share little everyday tricks that make home life easier. Cooking is a pleasure, but the washing, wiping and cleaning that come with it are part of the package!

So perhaps keeping both powder and liquid detergent at home isn't such a bad idea after all.

Are you team powder or team liquid? Have you noticed a difference in your laundry, too?
