Cooking in the garden :)

Vivian is not only cooking, she is also ... gardening! Actually, I love gardening and for me, I have told you already, is like cooking. You mix the ingredients and you wait for the result. In gardening, the ingredients are the plants, and the result is the flowers or the synthesis that comes up.
Few years ago, I started a project in my garden. I wanted to make a free floral fence on one side of the garden, the most important actually, the part that our living room is looking at.
It took me almost 2 years of reading various books, web sites, blogs on gardening and designing how this fence should look like. And from time to time, we were going with my kids and buy a plant that we have finally decided to choose. It was a big time, as immediately after we were starting the planting part, which was a quite hard task (I have to admit that dear hubby was helping with the most difficult ones :) But we were so happy every time that we were adding one to our collection...
Last year, this project finally came at it's end, and this spring we can finally admire the results...

At the end of the winter, our forsythia started to bloom with it's magnificent yellow flowers, but unfortunately did not took photos.
Immediately after, Magnolia that is in the middle of our floral fence, bloomed with it's porcelain flowers. Right now, most flowers are gone, to give place to the marvelous lilac (syringa) that gives it's best since we have planted it. This one, it's our dear neighbor that offered it to us and it's one of my favorites.

In parallel, it's time of the two rhododendrons to bloom and we really enjoy them.

From time to time, I will come up with more news of this floral fence as a new plant will start to bloom :)
I would like to admit here, that I consider my plants kind of my babies that I love to look at and take care of ! That's why today I wanted to share this love with you... I hope that this might give ideas to some of you or at least will enjoy admiring these flowers... it's a pitty that you cannot smell the lilacs :)

Pasticcio or the alter ego of Moussaka ! (for my son, that has football today and needs extra energy :) In Greece, when you want to treat someone special you cook moussaka or pasticcio! So, these 2 recipes HAVE to be in this blog. Not to say that are very similar recipes. Moussaka has eggplants, pasticcio has pasta macaroni instead. Kurtos Kalacs or chimney cakes

This romanian pastry that is called Kurtos Kalacs , is often called in english chimney cakes . It's a fluffy yeast dough (similar to brioche) that is sweetened rolling them to a sugar and cinnamon mix, sometimes even in ground walnuts, and at old times used to be served in weddings. Nowdays, we can find them in small street kiosks that bake them in coal grills. Hubby tried them first in Prague on a trip for his work and came back telling that it was so soft and delicious that I would surely love it! I searched for the recipe on the web and indeed I found how to make them at home but eventually never tried them. It took me a couple of years until I would taste them in Budapest (I liked them so much that there was no day passing without eating at least two!!!) But still coming back home, I did not dare to try making them... until one evening, coming back home from a busy day, hubby had made them for me!!! Pancakes from Cyprus or "Pites tis Satziis"

When I was a child, my grand mother used to make a kind of greek pancakes that I just couldn't resist :) She was making a huuuuge dish and she was offering them to all the clients of my father's shop... Lucky guys, yes I know! Unfortunately, I have lost my grand-mother very early at an age that I did not appreciate cooking so much, thus I lost also almost all of her precious recipes (I still have great memories from her though, which is what counts most...). Why am I telling you all this now? Simply because I have seen recently a recipe that looked very similar to my grandma's pancakes and you guessed well... I tried it immediately and I have fallen in love with it. All kids in my neighbor too btw :)))  The recipe that I am going to give you here is from Cyprus and they call it "Pites tis Siatziis" (Google it).
