Koulourakia (Greek Easter Cookies)

🌟 Difficulty⏱️ Time🍽️ Serves🔪 Skill level
★★ Easy~1 hr~60–80Beginner–Intermediate
For Easter, in Greece, we make cookies that we call "koulourakia" and as Easter is approaching, find today the recipe that I like and I make together with my kids. It's so much fun for kids as they can use the dough as play-doh and use their creativity to shape the cookies. Even you will feel better after playing/doing these cookies :)
I will give you half of the dose that I made, as it makes so many cookies that fun will turn into torture otherwise :))))

Ingredients

  • 250 g butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup white dry wine
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 egg (for brushing)
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ~1 kg all-purpose flour

Instructions

1. Cream Butter & Sugar
In a large bowl, beat softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

2. Add Eggs & Liquids
Add egg yolks and mix. Then add oil, wine, and vanilla. Mix until combined.

3. Form the Dough
Add baking powder and gradually incorporate the flour. Mix first with a mixer, then by hand until you get a soft, smooth dough that doesn’t stick.

4. Shape the Cookies
Take small pieces of dough and roll into thin ropes. Shape into twists, braids, or rings.

5. Prepare for Baking
Place on lined baking trays. Brush lightly with beaten egg.

6. Bake
Bake at 180°C (fan) for 15–20 minutes, until golden. Rotate trays if baking multiple at once.

7. Cool & Store
Let cool completely, then store in an airtight container.

✨ Serving tips & Variations

  • Baking time depends on thickness (smaller = faster).
  • Do not overbake—they should stay light golden, not dark.
  • Store in a metal tin for several weeks.
  • Optional: enjoy plain or with a touch of chocolate spread for a modern twist.
  • Perfect with coffee, tea, or as a homemade Easter gift.

Make small packages and offer them to dear ones. Happy Easter!
