1. Tsoureki (Greek Easter Sweet Bread) (see my French Brioche bread recipe that is similar)
A soft, braided sweet bread flavored with mahlepi and mastiha, tsoureki is a must for Easter morning. It’s often adorned with red-dyed eggs symbolizing the blood of Christ and rebirth.
Tip: Make extra—this bread is also perfect with coffee or turned into French toast the next day!
2. Magiritsa (Easter Eve Lamb Soup)
Served right after the midnight Resurrection service, this traditional soup made with lamb offal, lettuce, dill, and egg-lemon sauce (avgolemono) is deeply symbolic and warming.
Not for everyone, but an essential part of the authentic Greek Easter experience.
3. Greek Roasted Lamb (Arni sto Fourno)
The centerpiece of the Easter Sunday table is often a whole lamb roasted on a spit or slow-cooked in the oven with garlic, lemon, and oregano. Tender, juicy, and full of flavor.
Serve it with roasted potatoes, tzatziki, and a Greek salad for the full spread.
4. Red-Dyed Easter Eggs (Kokkina Avga)
These symbolic eggs are dyed red on Holy Thursday and cracked together on Easter Sunday in a game called tsougrisma. The cracking represents the resurrection of Christ.
Natural dyes like beetroot or onion skins can be used for a more rustic touch.
5. Greek Salad (Horiatiki) (see in my salads)
Fresh, simple, and essential. A big Greek salad brings balance to the rich Easter meats and pastries. Think juicy tomatoes, cucumber, onion, feta, olives, and olive oil.
6. Galatopita (Greek Milk Pie)
Easter isn’t complete without dessert. My go-to is Galatopita—a custard-style milk pie with a creamy filling, baked until golden. It’s rustic, comforting, and always a hit.
Don’t confuse it with Galaktoboureko—this one doesn’t have syrup but is equally satisfying!
